Designed for René Dulong, 22 rue Legendre, Paris - Presumably by descent - European private collection.

Literature

In 1903, Gustave Serrurier-Bovy and his long time friend René Dulong founded together ‘Serrurier & Co.’ This partnership would prove significant for both careers, with increasing influence of the latter on the former‘s designs. Two of the new firm’s major commissions came through Dulong, first ‘La Cheyrelle’, who belonged to his brother-in-law, and in 1904 his own apartment in Paris, 22 rue Legendre. This Serrurier-Dulong combination was a turning point in Art Nouveau furniture, and this armchair shows how much Serrurier-Bovy’s designs evolved in just a few years. In 1901, he had visited the Darmstadt colony and admired his german counterparts, particularly Hans Christiansen. He also kept an eye on the Glasgow School, with Charles Rennie Mackintosh at his very best. In many ways this armchair can be considered the perfect result of these various influences.
