Georges de Feure

Settee, ca. 1900
Gilded birch
h. 38 1/2 in. (98 cm) - w. 45 2/3 in. (116 cm) - d. 20 7/8 in. (53 cm)
The piece is un marked, how ever two separate hand-written notes were discovered within the structure, written by the last two upholsterers to have worked on it. The first, now lost, was probably written in the late XXth century, and seemed to originate in Central Europe. The second was written in 2004 by an upholsterer based in Essex, UK, in reaction to his discovery of the first note.

Provenance

Collection of Lady Jane Abdy (1934-2015), née Jane Noble, 8 Pelham Place, London - This settee presumably also belonged to her husband, Sir Robert Abdy, 5th baronet Abdy of Albyns, who died in 1976.

Exhibitions

The Copenhagen example was the one made by Georges de Feure for his ‘boudoir’ shown at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900. It was acquired by the museum, along with several other Art Nouveau pieces shortly after the show.
On loan to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2018-2024
